What it is
Glutathione is a tripeptide (glutamate + cysteine + glycine) your liver manufactures constantly — it's the backbone of your detoxification and antioxidant defense, present in every cell. Levels fall with age, stress, alcohol, and illness. Unlike almost everything else on this site, it's a familiar clinical substance: IV glutathione has decades of use in medicine and is a fixture of wellness-clinic menus.
What the research looks at
- Oxidative stress — the core mechanism: it neutralizes free radicals and recycles other antioxidants (vitamin C and E literally depend on it).
- Detoxification — the liver's conjugation pathways run on it; it's the actual hospital antidote pathway for acetaminophen overdose (as NAC, its precursor).
- Recovery & fatigue — studies on exercise-induced oxidative damage and reported energy/clarity effects in deficiency states.
- Skin brightening — a large cosmetic-use literature (it inhibits melanin synthesis) — the med-spa draw.
How protocols are commonly structured
Injectable protocols run 200–600 mg, two to three times weekly, subcutaneous or IM (oral glutathione absorbs poorly, which is why injection formats exist at all).
